At the outbreak of the war the Government launched one of the most memorable slogans of the whole conflict "Dig for Victory". From then on the whole of Britian was encouraged to transform there own gardens and spare land into small allotments to sustitiute the food shortage. It was hoped that this would helpprovide the foods needed to feed the family and friends in a much needed time but also to free up space on boats importing in to the country for important raw materials. In a short space of time Britain was transformed with gardens and public spaces dug up and converted to vegetable patches.
This page will show the progress of one of our members gardens Private Howland the section medic. With a keen interest in the home front and gardening i hope to demonstrate how easy it is to grow vegetables and to sustain your own food.
With the ever increasing price of food and a growing dislike of supermarkets i am taking a step back to the times of the war and making the most of the land i have. I take a simple approach to growing mud, manure, water and sun. No pesticides or chemicals at all.
I hope i inspire you and you join in this relaxing pastime. If you have your own photos and stories to tell please mail me and i will be glad to post them here.
